The University of Brighton has completed the installation of its solar array in “record time” to secure a higher tariff rate.

More than 660 solar panels have been installed on the roofs of three buildings at Falmer Campus in East Sussex.

They are expected to meet 7.5% of the campus’ electricity demand, generating more than 173,000kWh of green energy per year.

Last month the government announced it would reduce subsidies for small-scale solar by 64%.

The university said its environment team and green firm Ecosphere Renewables worked “flat out” during the Christmas break to complete the installation before the 15th of January deadline.

It added: “To safeguard an additional £200,000 income for the university over the next 20 years, the PV installation was brought forward following the announcements of the cuts and swiftly completed before the Feed-in Tariff deadline.”
